Plastic Free Dorchester Chamber Event

Plastic Free Dorchester Chamber Event

As new members of the Dorchester Chamber of Business we went along to our first event of 2019. Organised by Miranda from the Chamber the event covered the very hot topic in everyone’s minds of Plastic pollution and how the city were planning to make Dorchester plastic free.

Attended by a large section of Dorset businesses, this was no ordinary networking breakfast. There was a very serious message to deliver and the great and good of the town were out in force to promote it. Leading from the front were the extraordinarily motivated children from Damers First School in Poundbury. Having persuaded their teacher Ed that there was an issue with plastic in the school, they had taken their roles as environmental guardians further than anyone could have imagined. Not only have they been interviewed by Newsround but four of the class stood up in front of well over 100 people to talk about progress with the initiative.

Following on from presentations by the likes of Waitrose, the Mayor of Dorchester and other civic dignitaries is no easy task but they pulled it off better than any of the above. With no notes and only a few slides the children got us all thinking about how we could bring our own efforts to bear. As a result of attending the meeting, Chain Digital have signed up to stop using single use plastic in our business. If you want to follow suit just follow this link and state the three things plastic things you are going to stop using at work.

We named straws, plastic cups and plastic bottles as our three. We are sure there are many more ways we can contribute. No more water fro the cooler in plastic cups, it is so easy to bring your own cups in and enough for your customers during meetings. What we need now is for this initiative to take off in Shaftesbury and the rest of Dorset.

If it doesn’t get you thinking then head down to your local beach or river and see how much pollution there is on the shores or banks. Plastic bottles make up a large proportion of the waste and can be removed from the chain by refusal to use them. Check out the photo below to see how many are available at any petrol station. Come on together we can make a real difference.
